Rosa, Noel (1910-1937)



            Rosa, Noel (de Medeiros) was a Brazilian singer and composer who was born in 1910 and died in 1937. He thought himself a lot of what he knew. He began to play the mandolin when he was 13 years old. His father and friends then taught him how to play the guitar. By 1925 he was playing at events nearby. After that he then joined the group “Bando de Tangaras.” His first recording happened in 1929. His focus was on sambas. He was the first one to show “empathy with the plight of the urban poor”.
            He has 259 known compositions which were all mostly sambas. Many of those samba works were very popular and Rio’s carnivals. One of his special sambas was “samba de breque”. He had signs of having tuberculosis and was a heavy smokers that could both have contributed to his death at age 26.
