Pixinguinha


Pixinguinha (1897-1973)



            Pixinguinha was born in 1897 and died in 1973. He was a bandleader, composer, flautist and saxophonist. His father played the flute. When his skills on the flute were recognized he formed his group called, “Os Oito Batutas.” In a three-year period the group traveled to “major cities and also went abroad to Paris and Buenos Aires.
            In the year of 1928 helped organize the “Orquestra Tipica Pixiguinha-Donga. They recorded many famous works. He also organized the Guarda Velha, where he also had his best work portrayed as a bandleader. Pixiguinha has about 140 pieces, and they include “choros, polcas-choro, sambas and other songs heard in carnivals and waltz”. He experienced a stroke in which he knew might take his life away by surprise. He died at age 74.
